It’s more than flipping the switch
Dark Mode is not simply Light Mode inverted. We were looking for something that would feel natural and be easy to read during content planning sessions.
We were inspired by “komorebi” — a Japanese word that describes the way light filters through leaves in a forest. The delicate balance between shadow and light became the basis of our design. Dark Mode feels inviting and polished with care taken to ensure balance and comfort.

Dark Mode is a special feature of Buffer.
Colors that are considered: Buffer’s colors have been adjusted to blend harmoniously with a dark background. In place of high-contrast, bright colors, we created a softer, less jarring palette.
Layering and depth: The shadows on the elements in Light Mode make it easier to see which one is above another. In Dark Mode, we use carefully calibrated shades of gray and subtle opacity changes to create that same sense of depth — making the interface intuitive and easy to navigate, even at 2 a.m.

Dark Mode has been made available to all Buffer customers. You can either enable Dark Mode in your system settings, or by letting your system detect it automatically. It can be toggled on via the website. Settings > Preferences > Appearance Select ‘Dark’.
