Meta is pausing After an employee tracker program that caused division, the company has now implemented a new one. internal security issue Expose potentially sensitive data collected by the initiative to workers.

“We have carefully designed this program with privacy safeguards and while we have no indication at this time that any data was improperly accessed by Meta employees, we’re pausing it while we investigate,” Tracy Clayton is the spokesperson of company.

Meta released the Model Compatibility Initiative Tool (MCI), to US staff in April. The tool “collects computer inputs such as mouse movements, click locations and keystrokes, as well as screen content,” Workers who protested against the company over concerns about privacy, security and personal freedom have said that it is a bad idea. When MCI was first introduced, workers couldn’t opt-out, but this has changed in a limited way after worker protests.

Meta executives have repeatedly justified the project by stating that it is necessary to train AI software to work the way people do, and employees provide the most useful examples from which to draw.

Meta’s internal security officer issued a notice Monday that revealed MCI data bases had been exposed.

Former employee who actively fought against MCI describes it as “a mess” —and one that employees had expected would occur. “When workers raised concerns, leadership doubled down and failed to acknowledge the risks workers raised about the safety and privacy of worker and customer data,” Says the person “Leadership has clearly created an authoritarian environment where workers are no longer respected or heard.”

Meta surprised some employees by halting MCI entirely after Monday’s critical comments expressed frustration with the security problem. Meta informed WIRED before it announced the news to its staff.
