The Summit included voices from the AI industry, a current US senator, a former Trump administration official, and publishers including WIRED’s parent company, Condé Nast. “In journalism, many of us have been excited and worried about AI in equal measure,” said Anna Wintour, Condé Nast’s chief content officer and the global editorial director of Vogue, in her opening remarks. “We worry about it replacing our work, and the work of those we write about.”
Political leaders have presented contrasting views on how to ensure AI is a good thing. Richard Blumenthal (Democratic Senator from Connecticut) said that before AI can cause too much harm, policymakers must learn from social networks and find appropriate safeguards to prevent copyright violation and other issues. “We want to deal with the perfect storm that is engulfing journalism,” In conversation with WIRED Global Editorial Director Katie Drummond.
Dean Ball is a senior Fellow at the Foundation for American Innovation, and one of its authors. AI Action PlanHe defended the vision of that blueprint for AI regulation. He said it had introduced more AI-related rules than any other government.
AI figures also paint a bright picture about AI, with many stating that AI is a boon to economic growth. They argue it won’t go unchecked.
