Google AI mode update aims to kill tab hopping in Chrome

Starting today in the US, if you click a hyperlink in AI Mode on the desktop version of Chrome, the link opens right there—with Google’s search chatbot The sidebar is still visible on the left of the screen.

In the past, clicking on an AI Mode link in Google Search opened a separate browser window. The search ended when you clicked on the link, but AI Mode was still in place, where it had been, within the previous tab. Once you use the AI Mode tool to start a Chrome-based search, it will remain on your screen.

Google showed an interaction where a user types a lengthy query in the AI Mode Search bar. They’re looking for something. In AI Mode, the user clicks on the YouTube video that explains how to clean a coffee maker. The search bar appears beside the YouTube video.

In WIRED’s tests of similar AI search tools AI summaries were not as reliable or accurate as reading an entire website for recommendations.

A new feature of the update is that it allows you to search for multiple tabs, which may have a connection by topic. You can select multiple tabs to be analyzed by the Google Search tool. Click the + menu or the new option inside of the Google Search field. As part of the query, you can attach documents and images.
