The last five years has been spent by Anthropic. warning the world Imagine how advanced artificial intelligent could cause mass destruction, disrupt society and do a host of other serious harms. The company has simultaneously become one the strongest forces driving AI technology forward. It is one of the leading developers and suppliers of AI models, and it has customers such as the US Military. The company was recently appraised. at almost $1 trillion.

Anthropic’s bold messaging and its actions appear fundamentally in conflict at first glance.

Inside the organization, however, there are many who don’t perceive a contradiction. Anthropic is a company that operates on the basis of two fundamental beliefs. Artificial intelligence, the first belief is that it is the greatest technology of human history. Its arrival was inevitable. It is only a question of whether artificial intelligence will lead to catastrophe, or bring extraordinary prosperity.

Anthropic is also of the opinion that it will benefit the world if they remain at the cutting edge of AI, as several former employees told WIRED under the condition of confidentiality. The company’s leaders and staff often call themselves the “good guys,” Two sources stated that the responsible stewards for AI are those who have the most power. The company sees accumulating power—whether in the form of capital, compute, research talent, or political influence—not as an end in itself, but as the price of fulfilling its mission: “to ensure the world safely makes the transition through transformative AI.”

Helen Toner uses OpenAI, a tool developed by Helen Toner. Helen Toner was the former board member of OpenAI and executive director for Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology. analogy Anthropic’s worldview is described in this way. She compares powerful AIs to a forest that is filled with magical treasures as well as dangerous monsters. The treasure is luring all the nearby villagers. In her telling, Anthropic wants to venture farther into the forest than anyone else while investing heavily in taming the monsters—that is, capturing AI’s benefits while containing its catastrophic risks.

“What’s distinctive about Anthropic is they’re like, ‘People are going in the forest anyway, we have to do it first.’ This is very explicitly their strategy: build cutting-edge AI in order to be a serious player at the table who can talk about what cutting-edge AI systems should look like, what risks they pose, and pushing for reasonable safeguards,” Toner tells me. “They’re very straightforward about this. It’s just a weird enough strategy that people have a hard time hearing it.”

Dario Amodei is the CEO at Anthropic. He outlined his approach clearly in a conversation with his cofounders Postings on Career Page: “You have to find a way to actually be competitive, to actually lead the industry in some cases, and yet manage to do things safely,” He says. “If you can do that, the gravitational pull you exert is so great.”

Anthropic is founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees who defected after losing faith in the ability of the company’s leadership—particularly CEO Sam Altman—to safely bring transformational AI into the world. The company still operates under that sentiment. Two of the former employees I spoke with say that, in internal discussions, Anthropic executives often describe Altman and OpenAI—and, to a lesser extent, Meta and Elon Musk’s xAI—as cautionary examples that help define Anthropic’s own sense of responsibility.

Anthropic shares many similarities with other Silicon Valley companies. Most startups present themselves as Davids taking on the old, established Goliaths that are the industries they wish to disrupt. Google, Facebook and Apple all started with idealistic values that later got muddy or abandoned as the companies became more wealthy, bigger and influential.
