However, these posts could trigger an angry reaction. Reddit moderator’s annoyance for a different reason—they are common themes within a growing genre of AIFake, generated posts.
Cassie is one of the dozens of moderators at r/AmItheAsshole. This subreddit has over 24 million users and bans AI content as well as other created stories. Cassie, who wanted to only be called Cassie, and others, volunteers to moderate Reddit, have struggled with AI-generated content since late 2022 when ChatGPT was first released to the public. Other users use Grammarly to improve their postings and comments. Some are entirely AI generated.
“It’s probably more prevalent than anybody wants to really admit, because it’s just so easy to shove your post into ChatGPT and say ‘Hey, make this more exciting,'” Cassie thinks that as much as 50% of content on Reddit has been generated or rewritten with AI.
Reddit’s r/AmItheAsshole subreddit is one of its most popular. It has inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of other derivatives, including r/AmItheDevil and r/AmItheKameena. These r/AmItheAsshole variations have seen more AI-generated content, according to users and moderators. Others say the issue is site-wide and affects all subreddits.
“If you have a general wedding sub or AITA, relationships, or something like that, you will get hit hard,” A moderator at r/AITAH (a variant of the r/AmItheAsshole) says that r/AITAH has over 7 million users. This moderator, a retiree who spoke on the condition of anonymity, has been active on Reddit for 18 years—most of its existence—and also had decades of experience in the web business before that. She sees AI as an existential threat for the platform.
