OpenAI staff told WIRED was informed on Friday by the company that they would be reorganizing their business as part of a continuous effort to unite its product offerings. OpenAI confirmed to WIRED that cofounder Greg Brockman, who is also president of OpenAI, will lead the product strategy in addition to working on AI infrastructure. Brockman previously was assigned to oversee OpenAI product management on an interim basis, while Fidji SIMO, CEO of AGI Deployment, was on leave. Now, this change is official.
“We’re consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise,” Brockman wrote in an internal memo, which was seen by WIRED. Brockman also said OpenAI’s product lines are converging naturally, and that OpenAI has chosen to merge ChatGPT into Codex.
OpenAI is merging ChatGPT and Codex into a core product group. Codex powers the consumer and enterprise products of OpenAI, according to company officials.
As part of these changes, other OpenAI leaders will also take on greater roles within the company. Thibault Stottiaux, OpenAI’s Codex head, will now lead the core platform and product teams. Sottiaux played a major role in making Codex one of OpenAI’s most successful products. Sottiaux is also a key leader in the development of OpenAI’s forthcoming “super app,” The new desktop application aims to integrate Codex with ChatGPT as well as the Atlas web browser from Atlas.
Nick Turley has been the longtime leader of OpenAI ChatGPT. He is now moving into a different role, leading enterprise products. Turley will not be working on OpenAI’s consumer products anymore. He has been leading ChatGPT from its launch, and with his help, it has grown to over 900,000,000 weekly active users. Ashley Alexander will be leading the Consumer Products Unit of OpenAI. Alexander is a former Instagram VP who led OpenAI’s efforts on health products.
Changes are coming latest shake-up for OpenAI As leadership seeks to focus the company’s efforts on key products, such as ChatGPT and Codex. “super app.” OpenAI made a number of executive changes last month. Simo, for example, was on medical leave in order to concentrate on her own health. Brockman was previously announced as the person who would be overseeing product strategy while Simo is away. Simo has been on medical leaves and is expected to return. The company told WIRED she was working directly with Brockman when making these changes.
OpenAI faced increased competition in the last 12 months, from both Anthropic and Google. OpenAI executives are working to simplify their product offering ahead of an IPO filing that could occur later in the year.
