Each few months we review the subtle progress being made across Buffer. These aren’t flashy features or full-on launches — but they’re the kinds of updates that make everything You can also find out more about smoother.
Buffer’s team is focusing on improving quality in recent months (along with the attention-grabbing headlines). Take a look below at the many small improvements and enhancements to Buffer’s dashboard.
We’ve improved quality in Buffer
Small improvements and bug fixes have been a part of our job for years. Because we are a smaller team, in the old days, these small improvements had to compete for resources with larger features.
Recently, two teammates — AdamOur Senior Escalation Manager is a member of our team. Amanda, our Staff Product Manager for Channels and Platforms — decided to change that.
The system was designed to:
- Timelines defined for bug fixesThe timelines are helpful to our team in planning their work, and also help the customers understand when they should expect a solution.
- Regular refinement sessionsEach two-week period, the team evaluates all open issues and assigns them a priority. It keeps the team focused on work that is important.
- Customer follow-upsWe will let the reporter know when a bug has been fixed. We want to close the loop by letting people know that we are grateful for their feedback, no matter how small.
- Maintenance time is dedicatedAround 10% of the engineering capacity are set aside to fix bugs and maintain technical standards. The progress is steady because it’s not reactive but planned.
Adam compiles reports on product quality that include the number, severity and time taken to fix bugs. These reports allow the team to identify patterns and recurring problems, as well as guide their future priorities.
This all adds up. Buffer now feels calmer and more reliable, both for the product and team.

The future
This is not a job that can be done in one go. Data and automation will be used to detect friction, before it becomes frustration. Buffer’s performance has improved recently because of this. When you find something that needs improvement, please let us know. we’d love to hear about it!
